Writing an Effective Publicity Release

The following information on a single sheet of paper comprises the basic publicity release:

Title
Author
Publisher
Publisher Address
Publisher Phone Numbers, email, and website URL
ISBN, price, page count, publication date
A one paragraph descriptive summary of the book
A one paragraph author biography

Often the use of letterhead stationery will already have some of these elements in the masthead. If so, they need not be repeated in the body of the publicity release.

The basic function of a publicity release is to inform the recipient about the book.

The basic function of a cover letter is to inform the recipient as to why they are receiving a review copy of the book and does not repeat or duplicate the information present on the accompanying publicity release.

Every book submitted to a reviewer or a review publication should be accompanied by both a cover letter and a basic publicity release.
