Willie's Dad
Stanley Williams & Naima Abdul-Haqq
Williams Publishing Conglomerate
c/o Lulu Press
860 Aviation Parkway, Suite 300, Morrisville, NC 27560
9780615191218, $14.95 www.lulu.com

All to often when a man is sent to prison there are children left behind. Children who are confused, hurt, embarrassed, angry, and self-blaming. In "Willie's Dad", Michigan-based author Stanley Williams has written a realistic story for those young children, illustrated in a kind of American primitive, children's drawing style by Naima Abdul-Haqq, that mostly takes place in a prison visiting room where a young boy is visiting his incarcerated father. The story reflects how fathers and children can still lovingly connect with each other -- even when the father must serve out a sentence of imprisonment that can last for anywhere from a few months, to a few years, to a lifetime. As a correctional officer working in an Illinois medium-security prison for six years during the 1980s, and as an elementary school teacher today, Williams writes simply and with an impressive authority. It should be noted that 10% of any profits from the sale of "Willie's Dad" will be contributed to a college fund for Covert Michigan School District graduates. "Willie's Dad" is an especially appropriate picture book for young children having family members who are incarcerated in municipal jails, state prisons, or federal penitentiaries.

CHICKEE'S FUNNY MONEY, Mr. Chickee's Messy Mission (9780385327756, $ 15.99) needs no prior familiarity to prove a fun adventure, and stands well alone for any elementary-level collection catering to grades 3-5. Seen through the eyes of a little mouse who learns about the amazing story of Grandpa Mouse's youthful journey to the ark, Not Too Small At All transforms the Biblical story of Noah into an engaging story of God's love and renewal. "Often in the evenings Noah would talk to his family about God's plan. He reminded them that God's heart had been grieved because of the sin of the people of the earth, and that God had sent this worldwide flood as punishment for their wickedness. But God had provided a way of escape, a way to be saved from the waters of the flood." Gentle illustrations complement this reinterpretation of one of the Old Testament's most well-known parables.
