Two excellent guides are recommended picks for college-level collections strong in Alaska history and culture. Preston Jones' EMPIRE'S EDGE: AMERICAN SOCIETY IN NOME, ALASKA 1898-1934 (1889963895, $19.95) tells of a region 150 miles from the Arctic Circle which weathered many obstacles –p from the largest gold strikes in the world to war, epidemics, floods, fires and more. The gold strike brought ordinary 'lower 48' residents to a new home – and many daunting new challenges: EMPIRE'S EDGE traces their transitions and changes. Mary E. Hitchcock's TWO WOMEN IN THE KLONDIKE (1889963968, $16.95) was originally published in 1899 and tells of how two socialites survived the North. While it's a memoir, its lively writing and insights come with all the drama of fiction as it tells how the author heard of the discovery of gold in the Klondike in 1898, leaving privileged city life for Alaska to find her own fortune. She brought with her the basics of civilization – including a portable bowling alley, an ice cream maker, a Great Dane and a full-sized circus tent: hers is a lively, compelling saga indeed.

McSweeny's Publishing
1932416390 $18.00 www.mcsweenys.net

OK, now you may think that ANIMALS OF THE OCEAN: IN PARTICULAR THE GIANT SQUID is to be a serious scientific treatise – or, given its slim appearance, that it's to be directed to younger audiences. Neither is true – with great British wit, irony, and tongue-in-cheek humor, The Haggis-On-Whey World of Unbelievable Brilliance packs in zany squid and science references and neo-science observations suitable for any fan of Monty Python British humor. So why isn't this reviewed in our Humor Shelf area? Because any involved in zoology can't miss it: it's unique, funny and makes fun of scientific method in general – using a format and presentation which seems to provide facts disguised as humor. Very highly recommended for both science and humor collections at either the college or public library lending levels.

Robert E. Howard was the man who launched the fantasy literature sub-genre popularly known as 'Sword & Sorcery'. He was a prolific author of pulp magazine stories of the 1930s including westerns, detective yarns, sports stories, and more. He is perhaps best remembered today for his Conan the Cimmerian novels where he created such a popular character that long after his death, his literary estate would licence other authors to finish his manuscripts and story ideas left uncompleted by his suicide brought on by the death of his mother to whom he was devoted. Indeed, his first hardcover book was posthumously published in 1937 – one year after his death and is included in Leon Nielsen's "Robert E. Howard: A collector's Descriptive Bibliography, With Biography". Illustrated with black-and-white reproductions of cover art associated with the publication of his stories, "Robert E. Howard" is a 'must' for both academic library American Literature reference collections, and the dedicated legions of Robert E. Howard fans and an ideal way for those new to his work to create reading lists for themselves of both his well-known and more obscure writings.

'Leaving New Orleans': I'm leaving a city where the living and dead mix,/ when the dank summer air's reek is more ghost/than any town needs. The plane knifing through/night. I met someone here whose eyes drip/with the scars of some slaughter, the echo/whispering. There's a pain you can't even begin/to know. And 33,000 feet down, a human galaxy's/mute burn.

'In The Hills, Watching': Among the nerved grass, thrones,/dominions of grass, in chokecherry dewlapped hills,/hills buffalo-shouldered with shag of pulsed heat, meek hills,/sandhills of rose-hip and aster, in the philanthropic silence/the frail piston of all,/in hill heat, lying down in the nearness of deer./All knowing darkens as it builds./The grass is a mirror that clouds as the bright land goes in./You stay in the night, you squat in the hills in the cave of night. Wait./Above, luminous rubble, torn webs of radio signals./Below, stone scrapers, neck bone of a deer, salt beds./The world is ending.

Award-winning poet Janet Holmes presents F2F, a collection of free-verse poetry that speaks volumes with the briefest and scarcest of phrases. Drawing heavily from the compact linguistic style of modern text messaging, F2F (shorthand for "face to face", that is, meeting someone in real life rather than in cyberspace) draws both upon modern experience and upon classic dichotomies of myth as it represents the technological communications of love. Two styles of typeface add to the distinct "voices" of the poems in this one-of-a-kind anthology for the twenty-first century. "Next time she looked": E had learned / the new tool's / language- // bent it to his / scheming / like his best old bow // the invisible target // aches // to be seen // How E had / sped up the process / with his ethereal connections! // Darling boy- // I fall farther for you / farther daily- // hours he plays at it

I ran when doorways spoke//rife with smoke & zippers. But it was only the heart's/racketing flywheel stuttering I want, I want//until exhaustion, until I was a guest in the yoke/of my body by the last margin of land where the river//mingles with the sea & far off daylight whitens,/a rending & yielding I must kneel before, as//barges loose glittering mineral freight/& behind me facades gleam with pigeons//folding iridescent wings. Their voices echo/in my voice naming what is lost, what remains.

The war on terrorism is a global war the most of the western nations and their allies, waged against a spiderweb of non-state insurgency groups, their allies, supporters, enablers, and networks. Compiled, organized and co-edited by Doron Zimmermann (Senior Researcher for the Political Violence Movements and Integrated Risk Analysis projects at the Center for Security Studies at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) and Andreas Wenger )Professor of International Security Policy and Director of the Center for Security Studies at ETH Zurich), "How States Fight Terrorism: Policy Dynamics In The West" focuses upon how national governments are struggling to cope with the complex threat of mass-casualty terrorist attacks carried out by armed groups driven by ideological and/or religious motivations. Beginning with the informed and informative essay co-authored by Zimmermann and Wenger, 'New Perspectives on National Counterterrorism Policy', there are two major sections survey the dynamics of counterterrorism policy in Europe and North America with principle attention given to Britain, Germany, Norway, Canada, and the United States. Of particular note are the two contributions making up the fourth section: 'Israel's Counterterrorism' and 'Combating Al-Qaida and Associated Groups'. "How States Fight Terrorism concludes with another thoughtful and thought provoking essay by Zimmermann and Wenger: 'Toward Efficiency and Legitimacy'. Now in a second edition slightly revised by the author, The Devil's Tale follows as Lucifer assigns his trickster son Loki to live among the Americans, infiltrate their ways, and get to know them better than any devil has. But when Loki falls in love with a mortal woman, his increasingly desperate quest for understanding takes him to both the past and future, learning the tales of heroes, wizards, demons, and ancient gods. A fantastic parable, written with wit, humor, and panache.

Rudolf Kuenzil
Phaidon Press
180 Varick Street, 14th floor, New York, NY 10014
0714844233, $75.00 www.phaidon.com

'Dada' is an art movement of the 20th Century which challenged authority, hierarchy, and political control – making it a subversive force within the established art communities in Western Europe and America. In disturbing societal norms with respect to art and cultural production, it was the forerunner and midwife to such movements as punk rock and pop art, questioning all previous assumptions about originality, art, and the role of the artist. Dada maintained that everyone should be an artist and that almost anything could be classified as art. The result was an influence on the dominant culture with respect to radical groups, social movements, and artistic expression down to the present day. "DADA" by Rudolf Kuenzli provides an descriptive analysis within an historical context, examining Dada's impact and resonance in the art and culture of this opening decade of the 21st Century from the avant-garde work of such Dada luminaries as Hugo Ball, Marcel Duchamp, many Ray, Francis Picabia, Raoul Hausmann, Hannah Hoch, Kurt Schwitter, Max Ernst, Lajos Kassak, and many others. Enhanced with the inclusion of Artists' Biographies, Authors' Biographies, a bibliography and an index, "DADA" is a seminal and core contribution to professional, academic, and community library Art History reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

The corresponding annotation reads, "Better even than the pursuit of wisdom is the bringing of joy. Wisdom can bring you to the knowledge of God; joy brings you into the presence of God." An introduction, comments on the translation, very brief biographical sketches of the rabbis quoted, a glossary, and a suggested reading list round out this modernized compilation of pithy sayings that vastly transcend their era. Recommended especially for Judaic studies shelves and reading lists, as well as for personal study and enlightenment.

Overcoming Folly
Rabbi Shalom DovBer
Merkos Publications
291 Kingston Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11213
0826607438 $28.95

Rabbi Shalom DovBer of Lubavitch presents Overcoming Folly, a bilingual English/Hebrew treatise written in the style of traditional ethical Torah teachings. Overcoming Folly especially investigates the reality of material existence, and its obstacles to earning true spiritual understanding. Taking a Chasidic approach that emphasizes the mystical-spiritual aspects of the goals an individual should strive for, Overcoming Folly guides the reader in means to overcome stumbling blocks to enlightenment. A supplemental section of discourse summaries in the back of the book will prove useful to first-time readers. For example, the summary of Discourse Two reads, "Succumbing to sin caused by (a) strength of animal soul through constant indulgence of desire for the permissible, and (b) misconception that he will not be separated from G-d through it, and he shall have peace. True vitality is G-dliness and the 'realm of holiness.'" Grounded firmly in quotes and wisdom from Biblical, Talmudic, and Kabbalistic sources, Overcoming Folly lives up to its title in its instruction for not only avoiding worldly follies, but also committing and devoting oneself to Torah in a manner that is above reason, and thus embodies the positive side of non-rational behavior. Enthusiastically recommended for serious students and scholars, as well as for deeply faithful individuals committed to the Chasidic principles of striving for self-improvement.

Priest, lecturer, and award-winning author Donald Cozzens presents Freeing Celibacy, a serious-minded look at the practice of mandatory celibacy for Latin rite Catholic priests that has been the norm for 900 years. Though Freeing Celibacy extols the gifts of the spirit that voluntary celibacy can bring, Cozzens surveys the history of married priests in centuries past, clergy sexual abuse scandals and the rapidly declining number of priests today, and concludes that it is time to set celibacy free from canonical mandate to become a graced way of life for some but not all of the church's ordained ministers. A thoughtful and deeply spiritual treatise, expressing sincere concern for the future of Catholicism itself. "Just as it is possible for a slave to know more true inner freedom than his master, it is possible for a priest to thrive spiritually and personally in the condition of mandated celibacy. But this does not justify the institution of celibacy any more than a personally liberated slave justifies the institution of slavery."

An Overview of the Old Testament
John Malseed
AMG Publishers
6815 Shallowford Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421
0899573401 $14.99 www.amgpublishers.com

Written by pastor and Bible college lecturer John Malseed, An Overview of the Old Testament is an interactive, consumable study guide meant to facilitate self-examination as well as a greater religious, philosophical, and spiritual understanding of the Old Testament. An Overview of the Old Testament is not a lengthy, detailed summary of the biblical text; it is not even as long as a "Cliff Notes" style summary would be. Rather, each segment of the Old Testament is summarized in a set of sentences, followed by context questions, study questions with scripture cross-referencing, and self-examination questions for the reader. A blank line is provided for the reader to write a brief answer to each question. For example, Genesis Ch. 4 is summarized with "1-8 Abel is killed by his jealous brother Cain. / 9-24 Cain is punished by God and the first civilization is formed. / 25-26 Seth is born and men realize their need for God" and sample questions include "How did God instruct Cain?" (context), "According to the book of Hebrews, what was the key ingredient of Abel's offering? Heb. 11:4" (research study), and "Where in my list of priorities do I put God?" (self-examination). A one-of-a-kind reflective and contemplative, self-study tool, highly recommended for anyone seeking to better understand their personal connection to God through studying the Old Testament.

THE GOD DELUSION is a hard-hitting attack on religious thinking so you might be surprised to find it reviewed under 'Spirituality': in fact it's a book both atheists and spiritualists should read and consider: it examines concepts of God in all his forms throughout history and considers which aspects of belief are downright dangerous. It's not illogical that such a book would be included in both the general public library or the religious collection.

0789029847 $ 24.95 www.HaworthPress.com

The historical review of such actions allows readers to consider cultural influences involved in women's isolation.

All Rise
Robert W. Fuller
Berrett-Koehler Publishers
235 Montgomery Street, Suite 650, San Francisco CA 94104-2916
1576753859 $22.95 www.bkconnection.com

In the prior SOMEBODIES AND NOBODIES the author identified 'rankism' as a form of workplace abuse: his ALL RISE: SOMEBODIES, NOBODIES AND THE POLITICS OF DIGNITY continues the subject, exploring the personal, professional and social costs of rankism and providing strategies for change. Rankism is a barrier to liberty and justice for all and is as dangerous in society as it is within an organizational structure: ALL RISE argues for a society in which rankism is identified and not tolerated, moving outside the business arena and providing tips both businesses and politicians can appreciate. This becomes, then, a recommended pick for college-level libraries strong in either business or social science.

Public libraries will thus find it a popular lend.

The Color of Empire
Michael L. Krenn
Potomac Books Inc.
22841 Quicksilver Drive, Dulles, VA 20166-2012
157488803X $19.95 www.potomacbooksinc.com

THE COLOR OF EMPIRE: RACE AND AMERICAN FOREIGN RELATIONS is a scholarly analysis well suited to college-level collections strong in either ethnic studies or political history: it pinpoints how racism plays a major role in policymaking, using American history as the source for such a contention – right up to modern times. Race has served as a justification for US actions abroad and shaped policies, allowing the government to make decisions and take directions which would have been different in other circumstances. THE COLOR OF EMPIRE is an important key to understanding such choices and no college-level holding on either international studies or social studies should be without it.
